Our theme this week was "Ready, Set, Move." We read a story called: I Can, Too! which was about a boy and a girl moving their bodies in different ways. Then, they would take turns asking each other if they could do it too!
Phonics: words with short a; such as man, can, cat, mat
Comprehension: analyzing story structure and discuss the sequence of events (what happens in the beginning, middle and end of a story)
Grammar: sentence end marks and the order of the words in a sentence
Writing: rough draft of our class book: Our Families: God's Gift To Us
Spelling: Unit 1 Week 3
We spent the week learning about God's creation. We read Genesis 1:1-31 from the bible and had a discussion. We began to realize that God's goodness is all around us. We took a walk outside and saw the world as God did for perhaps the first time ever. We noticed all the little sounds and beautiful creatures that God created for us. We saw the grass and the trees and the sun and the sky in a whole new light! We took the time to name these items and to thank God. Here are some examples: "Trees. Trees are good. Thank you God." "Birds. Birds are good. Thank you God." "Water. Water is good. Thank you God."
We continue to discuss and learn about healthy food choices, especially at lunch and snack. Thank you for helping your child to find healthy snack choices to bring to school!
If you are thinking about volunteering (or chaperoning a field trip) with us during this school year you will need to complete the appropriately paperwork and Safe Environment training videos by today! Only people who have completed this will be allowed to volunteer and attend field trips with us. We hope you take a few minutes to do so! Please contact the office for additional information.
Please bring in a family picture (4x6 or smaller) for our class book entitled: "Our Families: God's Gift To Us." Please note, this picture will not be returned till the end of the year as we will be placing it in our class book. We can't wait to share these with you! Also, if you get a chance to write the names of each family member on the back side or another scrap piece of paper, that would be very helpful. Names can be tricky to spell sometimes! Thank you!
Please continue to remind your child to read and record their minutes on their reading calendar! We have a little over a week left to try and meet our goal!
We have a new form of assessment this year for the primary grades K-2, called FastBridge Learning. We are very excited to use this new assessment as it will give us more specific data on various reading and math skills. We can't wait to see the results and to share them with you. This testing will take the place of MAPS testing. It too will be conducted 3 times a year. We are currently in the process of testing. Hopefully by next week we will be finished. If you have any specific questions on this, please feel free to ask. Information will be shared at conference time, if not before.
Your child's nightly homework is to read at least 5-15 minutes per night to be marked on their Reading Calendar. This number will increase as your child becomes a better reader!
Math homework comes home daily. Please assist your child with this as needed. No homework will be sent home on Fridays and when we have a test or another form of assessment.
We have Phy Ed. on Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure your child has tennis shoes to wear on these days.
**It is highly recommend that students have appropriate shoes for running and playing safely at recess time too!**
